Using Bottles day 1

Well, after more readying about the fussiness I thought maybe I would switch to bottles. I do pump after giving the bottle so i have enough milk for the next time. he seems to be less gassy and fussy. He did nurse several times today but the majority of the feedings he did take the bottle.

One of the feedings we were out for, and since we were out longer than expected i didn't have any pumped milk with me. I keep some of those made up bottles with my though. So i gave that to him and he refused it. I am guessing he doesn't like formula at all.

Fussy Baby

URGh...... I wish babies could talk already. Noah is only 5 weeks old though, so I have months till that happens. Not sure what is wrong with him at all. He is so fussy, and it's ALL the time, so it's not colic. He seems to be gassy at times, but that isn't all the time. Looks like I am going to have to start watching my diet a bit more. Yup, though some sources say that there is no link to what mom eats to problems with the baby, I am not going to take any chances. I want him to sleep and be a happy baby.

Biggest problem seems to be the cow protein. So I am going to cut back on all dairy products. And if I notice even a small difference, I will cut it all out. Oh how I love my milk. That will be the hardest to give up. But for him, I will do just about anything.

I will keep track of what I am cutting out and how he is doing. Hopefully we can figure it out before too long, and make him back into a happy baby.

So no more caffeine or chocolate. Though I hardly ever have those things, I will keep them out just to be safe. I will also be cutting back on dairy. I will have to do some more research to know what has the most dairy.

My New Diaper

I got my new diaper in the mail today. I will have to get a picture and post it on here. It's a blue one with Monkey's on it. I was super excited to get it. I have to do diapers today anyway, so it will be getting washed soon, and probably worn tomorrow.

Tomorrow I am hoping to get to the store tomorrow and buy some flannel and fleece for my adventure in diaper making. Joanne Fabrics is running a sale on the snuggle flannel. And I have heard that's what I want to make diapers with. Looking online, it will be such a hard decision on what kind to buy. Good thing i don't have much money, than I might buy too much. Being limited in funds makes the decision even harder. I think I will have Hannah help me pick out. Then I can get some fleece for the covers in different prints.

Making my own diapers soon. YEAH

So I was looking to build up my diaper stash. I found some wonderful people who helped me get some great diapers for the best price out there. And after I got those, someone emailed me that they will show me how to make my own cloth diapers. So I figured I will give it a try. I am so excited. I went to the store and looked at fabric to buy. Good thing I didn't have the money with me, or the time to get things cut. There were WAY too many choices.

I guess the first thing i need to decide is how many diapers I want to make to begin with. That will help me to know how much fabric I need to buy. Right now, I have enough diapers to wash about every other day. If I make more i could go longer but of course I won't, BUT my diapers will last that much longer. Plus as they wear out, I can replace them easily and without huge expenses.

I only wish I had the time this coming week to go and learn to make them. But I will have to curb my entusiasm for making diapers for about 2 weeks.

UGH......My diapers STINK

So I have been washing my diapers every other day and hang drying them. Then about 4 days ago, they started to stink HORRIBLY. It wasn't after washing but after he wore them. Such an over powering ammonia smell. I knew right away when he peed, that's for sure. So of course I started trying to figure it out. I thought ok they weren't washed enough. Nope not the problem. Figured that out when i washed them all again, and they still smelled. I then of course tried again and used some baking soda and vinegar. nope still didn't work. So off to the internet for some research.

What I found was shocking. It's too much Soap being used. It leaves a residue, so too much soap it's not rinsing out the soap. Makes me wonder about our regular clothes then as well. So I thought I would test the theory. I put them back in the washer filled it up and let it start agitating, and sure enough there were soap bubbles. Problem solved. So I rinsed them 5 times just to make sure that all the soap was out. I stopped seeing bubbles on the third rinse. But I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to have a smell problem again.

So I thought I was using not much soap, but I have to use even less. I have 30 diapers total and wash between12 and 18 at a time. I use Wind Fresh soap which is the Sam's Club brand soap. I use the power. I am going to only need about a tablespoon of soap. So Happy to have figured out the problem.

Starting with Cloth

My biggest question when starting to cloth diaper is How many do you need. It comes down to several questions to ask. How often are you going to do laundry, AND How old is your baby. I did lots of research and I have read for a newborn and to do laundry about every other day, you want to have about 24 diapers. Well, I bought more than that. Sometimes the baby needs to be changed more, and sometimes less. So I thought I would be best to have more than the recommended amount. Then if I need to change more, I have enough diapers. I ended up with about 30 pocket diapers, and about 12 additional prefolds.

There are different types of cloth diapers, and I will talk about all different kinds later on. But we chose the pockets. They each have a microfiber insert, which they hold a TON of liquid. So right now, being a newborn, it works great. I will use the prefolds as well, and use the pocket diaper as a cover without the insert. I do that with I am doing laundry and all the inserts are in the wash. I keep 2 of the covers un-stuffed, so on wash day I have them.

When deciding to start cloth the biggest expense is right upfront. So if you are thinking of switching, you will want to start slowly building up your stash, or start stashing money away every week, and in no time you can purchase your diaper collection. Just be warned, they are SOOOOO cute, that it's always a challenge to NOT buy more throughout the time you are diapering. But then buying them is half the fun.

Just know that if you are switching a baby over to cloth, it can take sometime, about a week I have heard, for the baby to get used to the switch. Depending on the system you use, they may feel the wetness more at the beginning, so you may change a lot more. This was something I didn't know when I tried to switch my oldest to cloth. She was only about 4 months old, and after a weekend of trying to do the cloth diapers, and going through about 3 dozen prefolds, I gave up. She wanted to be changed EVERY time she was wet. Even when it was hardly noticeable that she was wet. I am talking just a FEW drops. Had I known that it would change, I would have stuck with cloth then.

Cloth Diapers -- Our decision

When I was pregnant with my first, we talked about cloth diapers. We decided not to. Mainly my husband thought it would be a lot of work. And I agreed. We didnt' really look into all of the options before making that decision. Now we wish we would have. We could have saved ourselves a TON of money on disposable diapers.

Fast forward we now have a son. We decided when I was about 6 months along to really look into it. I am a stay at home mom and to me the extra laundry was not a problem at all. So I started doing my research. WOW was all I could say. So much information out there about cloth diapers. Many different ways to do it, and different kinds. Then there was the brands. More brands for cloth diapers than disposable. But that seems to be a good thing, since every baby is different. A lot bigger variety of colors and patterns.

So i took the plunge at about 7 months pregnant and bought Cloth Diapers. We had saved up, since my daughter had been potty trained for about 4 months by this time, we just saved the money we would have spent on disposables, and used them to start up the cloth diapers.

Now my son is a month old. We have used them for 2 weeks of his little life. The first week home from the hospital he was still pooping out the black tar and then I went away for a week. So far no problems and we are enjoying them. No smell at all, and no trash. YEAH for us.
