PRAISE FOR ELEMENTAL

"Emily White's debut novel is a bestseller waiting to happen...I immediately fell in love with Ella." Author Michelle Pickett

"Who would have thought that mixing faeries and space opera would turn out to be so awesome? ... If you’re a sci-fi fan, you really can’t miss this debut!" birth of a new witch, book blogger

"Emily has done a fantastic job describing the worlds and this book has lots of action in it...keep your eye out for the book! Happy Reading! Go on a wonderful adventure to a new world where things are not always as they seem!" Tee loves Kyle Jacobson, goodreads review

"I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like Elemental. My hat is off to Ms. White, and anyone else who can take a novel set squarely in the sci-fi genre, throw in fairies and a few obscure King Arthur references, and make it all work." Keshia Swaim at The Book Addict

"I'm calling it right now. Elemental is the beginning of the next big YA series...I can safely say that I could give a copy of Elemental to my guy friends without

fear of getting punched in the nose." Author Daniel Cohen

About the Author:

Emily White lives in NY, wedged between two of the Great Lakes and a few feet of snow and ice. She's spent most of her life running away from the cold, and even spent a year in Iraq, but now contents herself with writing her characters into warm, exotic places in faraway galaxies. When not tapping away at her computer keys, she can be found reading, reading, and reading some more. And when she's not doing that, she's usually playing video games with her husband, peek-a-boo with her kids, or walking through her garden, wondering why the bugs insist on eating all her vegetables.

Up for giveaway is a set of 1 dozen cloth wipes.  Winner can chose if they want BOY or GIRL wipes.  This prize is sponsored by HN Designs.  HN Designs has been in business for about 1 year and makes some adorable clothes and other reusable items.

These cloth wipes are a 6x6.  They are perfect for just about any job.  They fit nicely in your wipe warmer.  I find they are also perfect for wash cloths in the bath tub.  They are the right size for my kids to wash themselves.  Their little hands can get a good grasp on these and not to heavy at all.  They are perfect to use as a napkin as well.  I have found so many uses for these wipes.  I have decided that I know need more of them. These are double sided flannel.

Now with cloth wipes, you also need a Cloth Wipe Solution.  Gingerbread Cottage is going to donate a sample of wipe solution.  I have used it and it is amazing stuff.  You open it, and the smell is such a clean and refreshing smell.  When I switched over to cloth wipes and used her solution, my son Loved it.  I can no longer use disposable wipes on him.  And he doesn't like any other solution on his bottom.

Wool Diaper covers -- Got Em Covered

Wool DIaper covers are great.  I know I was scared of wool for the longest time.  But I took the dive in and tried them.  I fell in love.  They are perfect at night for us.  We do wear during the day our longies and shorties.  I found this lady that makes them.  It was a one size cover.  How PERFECT was that.  So Now I don't need to have wool for all the sizes, but just have 2 wool covers that will grow with my son.  We rotate them so there is time to wash and dry them and then relanolize them as well.  My son is a very heavy wetter.  We had a rough time figuring out the night time routine.  And really that was when I decided I had to break down and try wool.  These were the first covers I bought.  They are the only ones I have bought.  I have made others for myself but these are still my night time covers.

Here is what her covers look like.
cloth diaper cover - crochet wool soaker - one size- snapping - orange striped
This picture shows it snapped up.

As you can see in this next picture there are lots of ways to adjust the cover.
cloth diaper cover - crochet wool soaker - one size- snapping - orange striped
You may think, "wow, that a LOT of snaps".  Yes it looks that way on the inside.

Here is the outside.
cloth diaper cover - crochet wool soaker - one size- snapping - orange striped
As you can see the outside there aren't as many snaps as you think.  This makes it truely a one size cover.

You do have to remember that this is still hand made.  She uses 100% virgin wool that is hand dyed.  So if you want something just ask she might be able to accommodate certain color schemes.  Just remember that customizing does take longer to make.  This is crochet using the Tunisian Crochet method, so the stitches are close together without the holes that traditional crochet makes.

Go check her out.  She is GOt Em Covered on Etsy, and Facebook.

      Cow Girl Costume - Review

I was excited to be able to review a costume from Anytime Costumes.  I browsed their site and they have a LOT of great costumes.  They are great for Halloween, but can be worn throughout the year.  My daughter loves dress up and these are perfect.  I picked out several that I liked, and let her pic.  She has a fascination with cows, so she wanted to be a CowGirl.  I clicked on the size chart to order the correct size.  I really liked that they had measurements listed and not just the size.  As every parent knows sizing is off.  My daughter is 4, and wears a whole range of sizes.  Another great reason for measurements.  So I went and pulled out my tape measure and measured her on up.  We ordered a size small 4-6.

We received it within 1 week of ordering.  That is a HUGE plus.  So when you realize you need something they are fast shippers.  Once it came in the mail, my daughter had it on the next day.  She would wear it daily if I let her.  She loves having a cow girl hat.  Her only downside is she doesn't have cow girl boots.  But that is something we have to remedy when she gets a bit older.  We told her she could wear her pink cow rain boots with the outfit and that seemed to work out.

I do like that the vest is separate from the outfit and the belt as well.  She have worn those items with other outfits.  The one negative I have is the neckerchief.  She put it on, and within a few hours it was falling apart.  The stitching on the velcro was coming off.  I am sure this was just a fluke on this one, but it did make her upset.  It was easy to sew back on.  I would have had it on in a matter of a minute, but she wanted to do it, so it took about 5 minutes. You can follow them on twitter

As you can see the outfit is about the perfect size for a 4 year old.  I would say, if your child is right at the end of the measurements on the size, I would bump to the next size up.  If your kids are like mine, they will wear it a lot.  So you want to make sure to give some growing room in their.

      Hopscotch - A NEW twist

So as we all remember as children a fun game was hopscotch.  Well, I took it to a different way.  I am working on directions now, so soon they will be available.

This can be rolled up or folded up and you can take with you.  To the park to grandma's, to a friends.  And is great for those in an apartment that can't chalk outside on the sidewalk.

I also thought about things that would be great for my son.  Not only can my kids learn their numbers, they can learn colors and shapes as well.

      Wool Dryer Balls

I Love my wool dryer balls.  I know a lot of people that do.  To me they seem expensive.  People wanting $8 or more for 1 ball.  Really there has to be a way to do them for cheaper.  So I decided to write up a quick tutorial on how to do it.

      Materials needed:
      Scissors
Yarn- wool.  You want to make sure it's 100% wool.  You don't want the super wash as that will NOT felt.  Anything 100% or a felting wool.
      Acrylic yarn or string
      Pantyhose.
Small crochet hook, or felting needle.  I use the crochet hook.

      Step One:

Wind the middle.  If you have ever wound yarn before you start the same way.

Then go ahead after a few rounds on your fingers, take off and start rolling into a ball, Like this.  continue to go around the ball until the desired size.  I normally go about half the size I want the ball to be.
      Step Two:

When you have  the size you want the ball, you then need to felt it.  Place the ball inside the panty hose.  Then use the acrylic yarn, NOT the wool, to tie a not.  If you use the wool to tie, it will felt.  Then go ahead and make another ball.  And do the same thing.  You want to make sure the balls are separate so they keep their shape, and don't felt into each other.  This is how they will look.
       Step Three:
After they are all done, go ahead and toss in the laundry.  You will want to wash and dry them.  I toss in with the white on HOT, and dry on HOT. They will be felted then.  Go ahead and remove the strings in between and continue making them larger.  Repeat step 2 and 3 until the desired size.

The great thing about them, is the more you dry them, the more felted they will become.  I have approx 12 in my dryer and do notice a difference in dry time.

If you use a wool yarn that ends up pilling that is fine.  you can chose to leave that way, or use a sweater shaver to it, and removes the pilling.

      Better Than Sex Cake- recipe

Now doesn't that look good.  I have to say I made this and WOW, it really is amazingly good.  I did make a variation though.  The recipe calls for a heath bar, another one I found said a skor bar. Well, we had peanut butter cups, so we used that on the top.  YUM.

Here is the awesome recipe for it.
      Better than Sex Cake

      1 pkg chocolate cake
      1 can sweetened condensed milk
      caramel ice cream topping
      1 container whipped cream (thawed)
      3-4 Heath or Skor bars

Bake cake according to package directions for a 9x13 pan. Cool for about 5 minutes.
Using the handle of a wooden spool poke holes into the cake, this allows the milk and the carmel to get into the cake.  Let the cake cool for a little while.
Slowly pour sweetened condensed milk over the cake, letting it sink into the holes; then drizzle some of the caramel over the top of the cake.
Let cake cool completely (cover and put in fridge for a while). In the fridge I give about 3 hours.
Top cake with whipped topping. Decorate the top of the cake with candy bar chunks and swirls of caramel topping. Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight and serve.
I have found that overnight is really good.  Or if you don't think you can wait that long, make it first thing in the morning.  Then by the time dinner comes to eat it for dessert it has been in the fridge for several hours.

      Today's a MONDAY... YEAH

Yup, most people would not like Monday.  I am enjoying my Monday.  It means the weekend is over.  We had a Very Busy weekend.  I co hosted a Cloth Diaper Change on Saturday.  That was a lot of fun.  Of course that morning was interesting.  My son had a meltdown for about 20 minutes.  Finally I figured out he wanted broccoli.  Gave him a chunk and he was the happiest boy around.  Of course it made it easier the rest of the weekend since I knew he wanted it.  Now of course I am out and that was dinner tonight.  So off to the store later.

Plus on Monday, my kids get their normal schedule.  It seems that when Dad is home as much fun as they have with him, everything gets out of whacked.  I know my kids enjoy the Monday morning as well.  We don't do much but play.  When they are ready for bed, they know they can go to bed.  Take some good naps as well.

Yesterday for Earth Day, we planted trees.  We had a LOT of seeds, so we just dug a trench and planted them and watered them.  My daughter took her container with her and pulled out all the worms for the compost bin.  It is the funnies thing, she is afraid of bugs, but show her a worm and she is all about them.  Yup she will be my little tomboy.

Real Simple Real Diapers Outreach – Cloth Diapering 101

This is the beginning of Real Diaper Week.   I am taking part in it and will write a post each day about a topic that is cloth related, and will be linked up to other blogs this week.

Photobucket  Yes that is correct.  You can save money on using cloth diapers.  Some people can argue that though.  Since there is a lot of cute diapers out there some people do spend more money on them.  BUT in all reality it does save you money.  Plus when you are done you can sell them.  that is a definite plus.  Would you try to sell a disposable diaper.  I know I wouldn't.

So you are thinking about cloth diapers.  Well, where do you start. Just a quick preview
What kind of diapers.  There are prefolds, fitteds, and one size.  Prefolds are great because they are the cheapest route to go.  They also allow you to get the best fit possible.  Fitteds are on the more expensive side, because you need to buy them for each size of your baby.  They are nice that they fit your baby without adjustments.  WAHM's are making one size fitteds now as well.  Fitteds will also need a cover.  I know for mine, I don't use a cover over the fitted unless we go out somewhere.  One size diapers are the most economical.  You can buy one set of of diapers and they can go from birth to potty training.

To get your diapers to last you will need to take care of them.  So you need to know how to wash them.

Wash routines will vary greatly.  A few things I have learned.  When you figure out your routine, DON'T CHANGE IT.   I start with a warm rinse, as the warm water really breaks down the protein in the urine.   I then do a Hot wash with detergent followed by 2 warm rinses.  the warm gets out the soap better.

Now you can do cold instead of warm, but for me I have noticed that the warm water works better.  As for detergent there are many kinds.  There is rockin green, eco sprout, charlies soap, a Happy green life, and the list can go on and on.  The best is to get several samples from each company and test them out.  You will find the soap that you like and then stick with it.

Now head to some other blogs and learn  other things about cloth diapering.
