When my daughter was 3 we went to a local quilt show. She LOVED it. They had on display quilts that kids made, or helped make. She told me that she wanted her quilt in the show the following year. So we went home and started working on it. We somehow missed the paperwork to put her in it this past summer, but this coming summer I am watching more for it. She was quite upset.
I told her about the Online Quilt show, and of course she wanted it in the show. She was 3 when she made it. I did not let her use the rotary cutter, or the scissors. She did all the sewing on her own though. I did help her a bit with the quilting part, as she wanted her name on it.
She chose the fabrics and how to lay them out. After we made the top, I took her back to the store with it, and she picked out her backing. She loved the hearts. For the binding we had to make it cows. Since she is big on cows, she needed them somewhere in her quilt.
She uses it all the time. I know some people have asked how I can let her use it. Really she made it and loves it. She is getting to enjoy her work. She takes really good care of it too. She knows the work that goes into making her things. Really that is the BEST lesson she could learn. She does appreciate and takes care of everything she gets because of this.

yes she made it. I did the cutting, but she figured it all out. She has since tried teaching my 2 year old how to sew. He sits on my lap whenever I sew.
DeleteI did help with the quilting, so she it has her name and the date at the bottom.
I love this! It's so much fun to teach our children how to be creative! It gives them such a sense of earned pride! Love it!
ReplyDeleteOh! She did a wonderful job! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteVery Nice! I don't think my three year old would have the patience. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe hearts are so pretty on the quilt! I have always wanted to make a quilt, this would be a fun project that I can do with my kids, thank you for sharing it with us :D
ReplyDeleteShe did a great job, quilting is so much harder than it looks!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing. What a great teacher! I need to teach my kids how to use the sewing machine soon. I had no idea they could learn so young.
